Privacy Policy

How we collect, use, and protect your data.

Last updated: 30 July 2026

Away From ("Away From", "we", "us") provides a map application for saving places and sharing them with private groups, available on the web and as an iOS/Android app. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how you can control it.

Information We Collect

Account information

Your username, email address, and (if you sign up with email and password) a securely hashed password. If you sign up or sign in with GitHub or Google, we store only the provider's account identifier — never your password on that provider. If you register a passkey, we store the public key material needed to verify it; the private key never leaves your device.

Places, groups, and messages

The places you save (name, category, location, and any notes), the groups you create or join, and the messages you send in group conversations.

Location data

With your permission, we use your device's location to centre the map on you and to let you save your current location as a place. This only happens while the app is open and in the foreground — we do not track or collect your location in the background, and we do not store a history of your movements.

Notifications

If you enable notifications, we store a push subscription (web) or a device token (iOS/Android, via Firebase Cloud Messaging) so we can deliver alerts about invites and messages. We don't use this for anything other than sending you notifications you've opted into.

Usage activity

We keep a limited history of in-app actions (such as searches) tied to your account, used only to make the app itself work better for you — for example, showing recent searches.

What We Don't Do

We don't use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs, we don't sell your data, and we don't share your places, messages, or location with anyone outside the groups you explicitly choose to share them with. Groups are invite-only — no one can discover or join a group without a direct invitation.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information above to operate the core features of the app: authenticating you, displaying your places and groups, delivering messages and notifications in real time, and responding to support requests. We do not use your data for advertising or profiling.

Data Retention & Deletion

We keep your data for as long as your account is active. To permanently delete your account, contact us at the address below — this erases your places, group memberships, and messages. Some information may be retained briefly afterward where required for security or legal purposes.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data. To exercise any of these rights, contact us — we'll respond as quickly as we can.

Security

Passwords are stored using a one-way hash, never in plain text. Sessions use signed, portable tokens rather than raw credentials. We take reasonable technical measures to protect your data, but no online service can guarantee absolute security.

Children's Privacy

Away From is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
